This week on the Love Bites LiveWell Interview Series (hosted by Love Bites by Tanuja), we welcome Dr. Mumta Purohit, licensed psychologist and founder of Purohit Psychology Services, LLC.
Dr. Mumta Purohit, Psy.D is a Maryland licensed psychologist practicing in Rockville, not far from where she grew up in Gaithersburg. She completed her master’s degree in Forensic Psychology from Marymount University and went on to obtain her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the American School of Professional Psychology in Washington D.C. Her interest in the mind-body connection became the inspiration for her dissertation topic exploring psychological factors in Interstitial Cystitis.
Dr. Purohit has gained a passion for helping those suffering from pain. Her expansive skill set includes work at Children’s National Medical Centers diagnosing and assessing concussion outcome and recovery, and work with the Charles County Department of Mental Health providing therapy for patients suffering from trauma and chronic pain. She furthered this work, helping individuals suffering from work-related injuries and finding ways to incorporate valued activities into their lives.
Dr. Purohit went on to complete over 2,000 hours of neuropsychological assessment methods and rehab psychotherapy at Goodwill of Northern New England Neurorehabilitation Services in Portland, Maine.
Since returning to Maryland, Dr. Purohit has continued her work in private practice with a focus on chronic pain and injury recovery. Her empirically supported approach to treatment includes use of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, which helps individuals to live a fuller life where they can re-engage in valued activities.
She also conducts a wide range of psychological assessments including ADHD evaluations, cognitive and emotional function assessment, accommodations testing for college, and psychological clearance for bariatric evaluations.
When not working with patients, Dr. Purohit teaches psychology at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia. She has received her health coach certification through the Institute for Integrated Nutrition in New York and helps clients achieve health goals through lifestyle modifications. She recently completed her 200 hour Registered Yoga Teacher Training at the beautiful extendYoga studio in Rockville, MD.
