What is the glycemic index?
They glycemic index is a scale which measures the effect of various foods on one’s blood sugar.
Why are high protein ingredients used in Love Bites’ desserts?
High protein blanched almond flour, organic cashews, and organic unsweetened almond milk all contribute to lowering the overall glycemic index of a meal. The lower the glycemic index, the more stable your blood sugar, which helps you keep hunger away, and avoid sugar highs and sugar crashes.
What is blanched almond flour that’s used in some of Love Bites’ products?
Blanching helps loosen the skin of almonds for peeling. To blanch a food means to plunge it into boiling water for a very short amount of time. Most blanched foods are immediately rinsed in an icy bath to stop the cooking process. Blanching raw vegetables will brighten the color while maintaining a crisp, barely-cooked texture and flavor. In the case of blanched almond flour, the almonds must first be blanched to remove the skins of the almonds and then they are dried and ground into a fine flour.
Why is agave nectar not a health food?
Agave nectar is very processed and very high in fructose, which can lead to weight gain over time. Plus, there are no nutritional benefits to consuming agave nectar.
Why do we use coconut nectar instead of agave nectar?
While coconut nectar and agave nectar both fall fairly low on the glycemic index, agave is highly processed and contains far more fructose than coconut nectar. Coconut nectar only contains about 10% fructose compared to the 90-95% in agave. Fructose has a very strong correlation to weight gain. (The only exception is whole fruit.)
Furthermore, agave nectar is not a raw, but coconut nectar is a raw food. Coconut nectar comes from the coconut tree. The process is a bit similar to how maple syrup is collected. The coconut tree is tapped and produces a nutrient rich "sap" that exudes from the coconut blossom. The sap is an abundant source of minerals, 17 amino acids, vitamin C, broad-spectrum B vitamins, and a neutral pH. The sap is not processed, which is the number one reason it is better than most of these raw sweeteners.
What are some of the benefits of organic coconut nectar?
Organic coconut nectar is a low-glycemic sweetener. This means it doesn’t spike blood sugar in a dramatic way, unlike the way table sugar or high fructose corn syrup does. Coconut nectar also contains several minerals, 17 amino acids, vitamin C, broad-spectrum B vitamins and has a neutral pH.
How does shipping work? What is the cost?
While we're always trying to find cheaper shipping options for our customers, we currently ship via USPS Priority 2-day shipping and the flat rate price is $13.97. If you are located in the Houston area, we have two pick-up locations available. One of our Love Bites by Tanuja employees will meet you at Whole Foods Market either in Sugar Land or in Katy to deliver your products.
You say Love Bites’ products are free of processed sugar. How are they sweetened?
We sweeten all of our items with raw, organic coconut nectar. Depending on the recipe and the item, we will sometimes also use coconut palm sugar (the crystallized version of coconut nectar), honey or maple syrup. All of our ingredients are extremely pure, sometimes local, and as fresh as we can find them. You can find a full list of ingredients on each product page.
What’s unique and beneficial about the salt you use?
We use 100% Pure Himalayan Pink Salt, a gourmet food-grade salt, and import it direct from the source. This salt is full of a variety of essential minerals. (It is reported to have 84 different trace minerals.)
How many calories are your desserts?
Love Bites’ Founder Tanuja doesn’t believe in counting calories. Instead, it’s much better to eat food made with whole, nutrient-dense foods than to worry about how many calories something contains. Ingredients are king. Our desserts are not low-calorie since they are made primarily with nuts, and nuts are naturally high in fat and calories. However, they are not crafted to make you gain weight, quite the opposite. Tanuja made them to help her lose weight. You can read more on Tanuja’s personal story.
How long does it take me to receive my products once I’ve ordered them?
Typically we need at least 24-48 hours from order time to shipping time. Afterwards, all of our products ship via 2-day shipping, so they arrive Monday through Friday depending on when they’re sent.
Do you cater special events, weddings or receptions?
Depending on the size, Love Bites can cater special events. For more information, drop us a note.
How are your products packaged?
All of our packaging is FDA approved and safe for food. The baked goods are packaged in food-safe plastic and/or food-safe paper packaging. They are then packaged in craft boxes or bags (sometimes we use plastic containers if it makes more sense). Please be sure to recycle as much of our packaging as you can!
How should I store the products?
Our products last the longest when they are stored in air-tight containers. Ice creams should be stored in the freezer and all baked goods can be stored in the refrigerator.
How long are the products good for once they arrive?
Love Bites Dessert Kits are good for about 6 months after delivery. They can be stored in the pantry, refrigerator, or freezer. Once baked, cookies, cookie bars, brownies and muffins will be good for up to twelve weeks if stored in the freezer. They will be good for about two-three weeks when stored in the fridge. And good for about a week (5-7 days) if stored at room temperature. Ice creams taste best if they’re enjoyed within one week of preparation.
What ingredients are in the chocolate chips you use?
We use EnjoyLife Mini Chocolate Chips, some of the cleanest chocolate chips out there! They are non-GMO Project verified, certified gluten-free and vegan. The ingredients in these chocolate chips include: Evaporated cane juice, natural chocolate liquor (non-alcoholic), non-dairy cocoa butter.
Are Love Bites treats safe for children?
All of our desserts are safe for kids because we don’t use fake ingredients, like aspartame or sucralose (Splenda). Instead we use whole food ingredients that everyone can benefit from no matter what your age!
How do the products taste best? (ie: room temp, heated up etc?)
All the baked goods taste best warm with a cold glass of organic unsweetened almond milk, or a mug of hot tea. If you prefer them at room temperature, they taste delicious that way as well. Some of our customers enjoy eating the baked goods after they've been in the freezer for a while, too! Ice creams are best after being left out at room temp for about 5-10 minutes.
